Description

Dated 1858, this indenture is associated with the historical figure, Elizabeth Foulsham, owner of the Wroxham Broad Mansion. The document is an extraction of the Will of this lady and contains details of her bequests, following her death in 1858. It begins with the original Will of Elizabeth Foulsham of Broad House, Wroxham, a glorious 'Queen Anne' Mansion on the edge of Wroxham Broad, with a family history dating back to the 16th century. One of those who received rights to the estate, following her death in 1858, was her cousin, Alfred Chamberlin, the owner of an incredibly early Tea Plantation in India (Assam district), having been a former Wroxham resident.
It has the most convoluted text and complicated 'legal language' of anything I have read before, with several codicils and written amendments. Elizabeth was a Spinster, having inherited the Mansion and Estate from her half- brother, William Buckle, who was a Bachelor, and so having no descendents, eventually, towards the end of the 19th century, it was acquired by the Trafford family, Gentlemen Farmers, not aristocracy, There is an interesting extract which refers to the sale of some of the estate land to the East Norfolk Railway Company, for the sum of £406.10s.0d which in the present day would be the equivalent of over £57,000 - considering that the estate was over 300 acres, it was probably a huge return for a small investment - with investment bonds in the railway company adding to the value of the entire estate.
