Antique Mother Of Pearl Reliquary Crucifix

Description

A lovely late 19th century Crucifix, made from Olive Wood. The work is typical of Jerusalem craftsmen although this is more ornate than usual examples. The MOP has been cut, shaped and carved and shows representations of the Evangelists. There is some minor loss which does not detract from the overall look of the piece. The obverse side has been fourteen circular holes, covered with numbered disks of MOP to seal in the fragments of stone gathered from the fourteen Stations of the Cross, stopping points, along the Via Dolorosa, the way through the streets of Jerusalem which Christ followed on his way to His Crucifixion at Golgotha. This is a lovely devotional or artistic piece.
