Description

This is a fascinating item. A box containing a Pewter drinking cup, approx 7.7 cms high, when extended, and a base measurement of 7 cms. Underneath it has a name and place , WIRZ, PHIL, which stands for Wirz and Philadelphia. Reputedly, it belonged to Dr./Capt Henry Wirz, Commandant of The Sumpter Camp for Confederate Prisoners of war in Andersonville (Georgia, USA), who was hanged on the 10th November 1865, for the inhumane treatment and murder of prisoners at the camp. This is typical of the collapsible cups manufactured during the American War of Independence Period and may have been made by his family, who emigrated from Austria to America, and were manufacturers of surgical instruments.
