A 19th century, Tavern Ale Muller, made from copper. This was filled with Ale and the spiked end was pressed into the embers of the fire to heat it - note the rather elongated handle to keep the hand away from the heat of the fire. Copper, of course, is a very efficient and rapid conductor of heat. These are often mistaken for grain measures, it is the handle here, which is the 'give away'.
