A Quizzing Glass, for examining objects, books or documents, dating from the mid Georgian Period c.1760. It is a round 'convex' magnifying glass set in a gilded base metal frame with a looped extending handle, through which a ribbon or chain could be threaded to allow it to be worn around the neck. When the handle is closed, the glass would tuck into a waistcoat pocket. The construction is consistent with the earlier pieces, lacking the more robust and decorated style of the Regency Glasses. This is a rare and curious piece, which has managed to survive over 250 years ! The extended length is about 3 inches.
